St Brigid’s Primary School, Kyogle, students delivered a captivating and award-winning performance of Castles at Wakakirri, showcasing their creativity, dedication, and teamwork in Australia’s largest school performing arts event. (6 September 2024)

St Brigid’s Primary School, Kyogle, students wowed audiences with their award-winning performance Castles at Wakakirri, Australia’s largest school performing arts event. Over 200 schools participated in the 2024 festival, themed ‘Great stories inspire change.’

Eighty-six students from Year 1 to Year 6 spent months preparing, turning lunchtime practices into vibrant rehearsals. Their powerful performance was inspired by Lisa Aisato’s Måling, celebrating diversity and inclusion. A special thanks goes to Mrs Kennedy and Ms Beetge, whose visionary leadership shaped this remarkable performing arts experience. Their creativity and guidance helped the students shine and bring their artistic talents to the stage with pride and confidence.

After a community preview at Kyogle Memorial Hall, the students took the stage at Logan Entertainment Centre, impressing judges and earning a spot in the State Wakakirri Finals. Competing with six other schools, they received the Harmony and Cultural Unity Story State Award for their 'visually and emotionally stunning' performance.

The group earned  several accolades, including:

  • Production Award for Costumes
  • Storytelling Award
  • Storytelling Award for Strong Use of the Festival Motif
  • Storytelling Award for Story Theme and Concept
  • Production Award for Editing

The students shared their reflections on the experience:

Being able to go on the bus and perform with the little kids as well was really fun,’ said Year 6 student Parker.

My favourite thing about Wakakirri was seeing the whole performance come together on stage, after weeks and weeks of trying hard to make it perfect,’ said Year 6 student Belle.

I enjoyed being able to spend a memorable moment with friends and being able to see the satisfying end result of our amazing story and being able to stand up there with lights and sounds and it all being really cool and fun,’ said Year 6 student Yari.

Performing in front of packed houses was a thrilling experience for all involved, and the entire school community takes immense pride in the students’ achievements.

St Brigid’s students, staff, and community are incredibly proud of the team’s achievements at Wakakirri.
